The
Community Food Banks of South Dakota in Sioux Falls and Rapid
City have grown from distributing less than a million pounds in 1991 to close to twelve million this year. Through our affiliation with Feeding America and the
more than 200 food banks in its network, we have access to surplus
food product. This product comes by way of donations from many national donors and from other food banks who share their excess product with us.
National donors are companies such as Kellogg's, Kraft, and General Mills. Feeding America offers us a donation from these companies, and we coordinate with
our trucking partners to arrange pick up. Additionally, other food banks in the network periodically find themselves with
food product surpluses that they are willing to share with us. By staying in contact with these food banks, we are able to secure much needed
store shelf-quality food that we would otherwise not have access to.
Today, Feeding America is the nation's largest
charitable hunger relief organization, addressing the problem of
domestic hunger by providing emergency food assistance to more than 23 million Americans in need every year.
Our Network secures and distributes more than 2 billion pounds of donated food and grocery products annually and supports approximately 50,000 local charitable agencies operating more than 94,000 programs including after-school programs, emergency shelters, food pantries, Kids Cafes and soup kitchens.
